A new study has found that the men who took Viagra, Pfizer's blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug, for about five years were more likely to have erectile dysfunction than those who did not take the drug.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School and the University of Texas, Austin conducted a study on the use of Viagra and sildenafil (a similar drug) among men who were unable to take the drug at the time.
The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that the men who took the drug were twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction than those who did not take the drug. Viagra's maker, Pfizer, said the results were "fairly definitive" in an editorial accompanying the study published Monday in The Lancet.
"We have found that sildenafil is highly effective for treating erectile dysfunction, but it is not approved for the treatment of premature ejaculation," said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, an expert in sexual medicine at the San Diego Sexual Medicine Center.
Researchers at the study said the results may be due to the fact that the drugs used in Viagra were taken as a "personal and non-commercial decision."
Dr. Irwin said that the results were consistent with the belief that the drugs are only intended for use in men who have been unable to get or maintain an erection for sexual activity. "The results of our study are consistent with these beliefs," he said. "Our results suggest that if you're taking Viagra and you think you can get it at a lower cost than it costs for you, it's not a good idea to take it for a short time."
Viagra and sildenafil are the most common erectile dysfunction drugs in the world. They were introduced in 1998 as a treatment for male erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has been one of the world's most popular drugs for the past decade. It became one of the most popular drugs in the world in 2003.
In June, the Food and Drug Administration approved sildenafil to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Pfizer said the results of the study showed that the men who took Viagra were twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction than those who did not take the drug.
"In this study, we found that the men who took Viagra were twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction than those who did not take the drug," Goldstein said.
Pfizer's sildenafil drug was originally developed as a treatment for impotence, but Pfizer has since developed and sold it to several other companies, including Sanofi-Aventis Inc., which owns the drug, and Amgen Inc., which produces sildenafil.

Share0 ShareA combination tablet of Sildenafil and Tadalafil is the treatment for erectile dysfunction, or ED. Sildenafil treats ED by increasing blood flow to the penis, allowing a man to achieve and sustain an erection when sexually aroused.
The first ever clinical trial in the USA, the Viagra® trial, is over. In November, a US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel voted last week to recommend that the Food & Drug Administration remove the drug from the market. The committee’s recommendation, which was based on a random sample of about 30,000 patients, was supported by the FDA. The committee had requested the drug be removed from the market because it is effective for men who have erectile dysfunction. This prompted the panel to include the drug in the FDA advisory panel to the US, as well as the FDA and Pfizer Inc. The FDA and Pfizer Inc. had previously announced that they would recommend that Viagra be removed from the market.
The Viagra® trial, conducted by the Viagra® Research Center, was one of the first clinical trials on the use of sildenafil citrate in men with erectile dysfunction. During the trial, patients taking sildenafil citrate and a placebo were given the drug in an open-label randomized fashion. The drugs were then taken at the same time, for the same indications. The placebo group also received the drugs for another six months. The trial was intended to assess the effects of the drugs on erections and blood pressure in healthy volunteers. In the event that a man taking sildenafil citrate could be enrolled in the trial, he would be required to take the drug with food. The drug would only be available in tablet form, but not in a capsule. The drug would be available in a pack of 10 tablets, or the drug in a pack of 10 tablets in the form of a single-dose pill. All of the participants in the trial were required to take the drugs for four weeks prior to beginning the trial. There was no way to determine the efficacy of the drugs on erections and blood pressure.
After the trial began, it was revealed that the drugs had adverse effects on blood pressure. The men who took the drug had to take medication at the same time every day for four weeks prior to starting the study. The men who did not take the drugs were given another four weeks before the beginning of the study. The men taking the drugs were not asked about the risks of the drug, but instead reported their reaction. In the event that the men could be enrolled in the trial, they would be required to take the drugs for the full duration of the trial. The men taking the drugs had to take the drugs for five days prior to beginning the trial, and for three days after they were discharged from the hospital. At the end of the trial, the men who had taken the drug had to take another four weeks before they had to start the study. If a man in the placebo group had taken the drug, he would be required to take another four weeks before starting the trial. The men who had not taken the drugs had to take their medication at the same time every day for four weeks prior to starting the trial.
The men who took the drug had to take the drug at a time of day before the beginning of the study, so it was possible that the men taking the drug had taken their medication at a different time than the men who had not taken the drug. The men who took the drugs had to take their medication for a shorter time period, so the medication would not have been expected to be effective at the beginning of the trial. The men who took the drug had to take their medication for one week prior to starting the trial. The men taking the drug had to take their medication for two weeks prior to starting the trial.
Because of the lack of efficacy of the drugs on erections, the trial had to be stopped.
Viagra® TrialAfter the men were started on the drug, they were asked by their doctors to take the drug as directed. The men in the study took a pill for five days. The men who took the drug were required to take one tablet every three days for three days prior to starting the trial. In the event that a man in the placebo group took the drug, he would be required to take the drug for five days prior to starting the trial. The men taking the drug had to take the drug for four weeks prior to the beginning of the trial.
After the men who had taken the drug had been on the drug for the trial, they were asked by their doctors to take another pill, and they were required to take the drug for five days prior to the beginning of the trial. They were also required to take the medication for three days prior to the beginning of the trial. The men who had not taken the drug had to take their medication for a shorter time period, so the medication would not have been expected to be effective at the beginning of the trial.
Note: Other medications can affect how Sildenafil is processed in your body, potentially impacting its effectiveness. These include azole antifungals (such as itraconazole or ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as clarithromycin or erythromycin), HIV protease inhibitors (such as saquinavir), mifepristone, rifampin, and ritonavir.
Combining Sildenafil with other medications for erectile dysfunction (ED) or pulmonary hypertension, such as tadalafil or vardenafil, is harmful.
